Architect, Professor Emeritus at Kokushikan University, Special Visiting Professor at Meiji University, Visiting Professor at Kyoto College of Art, Visiting Professor at Tsinghua University (Beijing). Representative of the first-class architectural firm Tea Life Environmental Lab. Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA).

Born in Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo in 1951. On his mother's side, he is a descendant of Yataro Iwasaki, founder of the Mitsubishi zaibatsu. After graduating from the School of Environmental Design at the University of California, Berkeley, he majored in architecture at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, earning a master's degree in 1976. He then established an architectural design firm based in the United States and has been active internationally. He has taught at Harvard University, Yale University, and other universities, alongside Tadao Ando.

He moved to Japan in 1997 and has been working on architecture, urban planning, and cultural heritage preservation, mainly in Asia. After serving as a professor at Kokushikan University, he became a professor emeritus. He is also a visiting professor at Tsinghua University in China, where he is involved in education and research, and has overseen international architectural projects such as the Longquan International Bamboo Architecture Biennale.

He has previously served as Chairman of the Council of Asian Architects, Vice Chairman of the Japan Institute of Architects, and International Director of the American Institute of Architects, and has made significant contributions to promoting architectural cultural exchange between Japan and Asia and sustainable design.
